Israeli actress Gal Gadot has shared her thoughts on why Disney’s highly anticipated film ‘Snow White’ did not perform well at the box office.

Gal Gadot, who played the Evil Queen in the remake, believes the movie’s numbers were affected by the political climate and the pressure on celebrities to speak about the Israel-Palestine conflict.

In a recent interview with Israeli television, Gadot said she expected ‘Snow White’ to be a major hit. “I was sure that this movie was going to be a huge success,” she explained. “And then October 7 happened. Since then, there has been a lot of pressure on people in Hollywood to speak out against Israel. I was disappointed that the movie was greatly affected by that and didn’t do well at the box office.”

The October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel and the following war in Gaza have divided Hollywood. Many celebrities have faced criticism online for either staying silent or taking sides. Gadot has been vocal in her support for Israel, even before ‘Snow White’ was released in March.

She told the outlet that she could not stay quiet despite the wave of negativity she faced. “I was shocked by the amount of hate,” Gadot said. “So many people think they know what is going on, but they have no idea. And the media is not always fair. I had to speak up.”

While Gadot feels her stance may have affected the film, she is not the only one connected to ‘Snow White’ who has been at the center of controversy. Rachel Zegler, the 23-year-old actress who played Snow White, also faced backlash during the film’s promotion.

Critics accused her of being dismissive about the original 1937 Disney classic in interviews. On top of that, her personal political views stirred debate online.

Jonah Platt, the son of ‘Snow White’ producer Marc Platt, suggested Zegler’s behavior also hurt the film’s performance. In a post on social media, he revealed that his father had to fly across the country to confront the young actress about her public comments.

“My dad… had to leave his family to reprimand his 20-year-old employee for dragging her personal politics into the middle of promoting the movie,” Jonah Platt wrote. “This is called adult responsibility and accountability. And her actions clearly hurt the film’s box office.”

As of now, ‘Snow White’ has earned around $205 million worldwide. While that sounds impressive, the number falls short when compared to its massive budget of $269 million, not including the marketing costs.
